Hoosiers beat Michigan for 11th consecutive time, stay undefeated at home

The IU men's basketball team had won 10 straight games against Michigan heading into its weekend matchup, including 13 of the last 14.\nSaturday afternoon that streak grew even longer.\nThe No. 23 Hoosiers defeated the Wolverines 76-61 in Assembly Hall, improving their record to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference.\nIU came out firing to open the game and jumped out to an 11-0 lead within the first two minutes of play behind six points from junior forward Lance Stemler.\n"We wanted to come out and attack as a team," said Stemler, who knocked down two 3-pointers to open the contest. "We thought to win the first four minutes was crucial. So we came out attacking and we got open looks. Shots fell."\nMichigan head coach Tommy Amaker said after the game that he had hoped his team would be the ones to take the advantage from the start.\n"We really felt it was going to be an emotional start for them," Amaker said. "I was hopeful that we would have a chance to match that. But certainly we were unable to do it, and I think when they hit their first few threes, that really got things rolling for them."\nAfter jumping out to the quick lead, the Hoosiers did not look back for the remainder of the game. IU led by nine at halftime after shooting 57.1 percent from the 3-point line and ran its lead up to 20 within the first five minutes of the second half.\nIU coach Kelvin Sampson said he was pleased with his team's effort Saturday and did not see any faults in the Hoosiers' performance.\n"We came out and we had a great start," Sampson said. "Our defense was really, really solid all day. We did a great job of monstering, post doubling, those kids on the post. Offensively, great spacing, moved the ball, passed the ball well, made shots. I can't think of one area today that we weren't pretty good in."\nIU shot 50.9 percent from the field Saturday, including 60 percent in the second half. They also out-rebounded the Michigan 35-28 and outscored them 28-20 in the paint. Junior forward D.J. White and senior guard Rod Wilmont led all scorers with 15 points apiece and were two of four Hoosiers to score in double-digits. Stemler and freshman guard Armon Bassett each tallied 11.\n"I try and get into the gym as much as possible, before and after practices," Stemler said. "I just need to keep shooting."\nThe Wolverines also had four players score in double-digits, but struggled shooting the ball throughout the game. Michigan shot just 2-for-9 from the 3-point line and 34.9 percent from the field.\n"I thought the big difference in the ball game was the start of both halves," Amaker said. "I thought they had great energy. Certainly starting the game, they had us on our heels right away. We dug a deep hole, certainly with playing here, and with players like D.J. White and Rod Wilmont, and the way that they played this afternoon it made it very difficult for us to overcome that mountain that we found ourselves up against"
