Educated ideas

After Thursday's debate, the Indiana Daily Student asked each candidate in the 9th Congressional District for their thoughts on the cost of higher education.

"The first thing is we need to do a serious study of higher education. The cost of higher education goes up 3 or 4 or 5 \npercent a year, while the inflation rate is only 1 or 2 percent. We need to understand why that is. We need to understand why it's increasing at those rates."\nMike Sodrel, R-9th

"I called for more money in the budget for higher education when I was in office and was accused of trying to buy votes when I said it. If we can spend $400 \nbillion in Iraq, we can increase the budget for college loans."\nBaron Hill, Democratic candidate

"I'm not a fan of subsidizing (higher \neducation), even though I benefit from it in my profession. The government shouldn't be in the business of student loans. The private sector can take care of that."\nEric Schansberg, Libertarian candidate and professor of economics at IU-Southeast
