What: Danzante (1947) by Diego Rivera (Mexican, 1886-1957)

Why you should care: Diego Rivera was one of the major proponents of figurative painting in the 20th century and was a leader of the Mexican mural movement. Rivera applied the monumental style he had developed as a muralist to this portrait of his friend, Don Jesus Robles, a brickmaker and musician. Robles was a member of Concheros, a society devoted the revival of traditional Mexican dance and music.
