Finding some 'Soul'

For more than 30 years, the IU Soul Revue has been honoring the heritage of black popular music through song and dance. The male and female ensemble churns out its soul and R&B with horns and a rhythm section, occasionally accompanied with a string section and dancers. \nDirector Nathanael Mahluli said the Soul Revue covers songs from artists like the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, the O'Jays and Kool and the Gang. The group also covers songs from contemporary artists like Mary J. Blige and D'Angelo, in addition to original pieces. \nThe group has performed around Bloomington at places like the Buskirk-Chumley Theater and Bear's Place, and in 2003 the group traveled to New York City for a performance at the Harlem School of the Arts. Tuesday night, auditions were held at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center as group leaders looked for talents to uphold the tradition of the IU Soul Revue.
