Carmichael Room to remain in Morrison

IU officials have decided against moving the collection of Hoagy Carmichael memorabilia currently housed in Morrison Hall, according to The Associated Press. The Hoagy Carmichael Room, which contains artifacts including original sheet music and an Academy Award, was set up as a memorial to the famous Bloomington native, who composed hits such as "Stardust" and "Georgia on my Mind." \nA plan from University officials to move the items required approval from Carmichael's relatives, however, and was dropped after the family raised concerns. Officials hoped to move the collection to the Indiana Memorial Union in order to make room for a new biology lab, according to a Nov. 11 article in the Indiana Daily Student. \nNeil Theobald, IUB's vice chancellor for budget and administration, said he was not disappointed the Carmichael Room did not move to the Union, even though it would have meant more classroom space. He said he would not have been comfortable leaving the Carmichael items in the room and converting it to a classroom because there would have been no supervision of the items. \n"We have the same space as 20 years ago, but 6,000 more students," he said of the University's available classrooms. "We have to build additional buildings or find more space"
