Don't screw class

To all the members of the Facebook group "Screw class, let's get drunk," specifically those who believe in its (dare I say) "philosophy," I have a wonderful suggestion. You cannot go to class as often as you please, get drunk as often as you want and, most importantly, not waste your (or your parent's) money simultaneously: Just drop out.\nIn high school, it might have been cool to say, "I'm flunking three classes," but here it isn't. Each semester, students throughout campus can be overheard saying, "I overslept and missed my midterm because I was too hungover." It's amazing that some people aren't concerned enough about their grades to put down their drinks for one night, and it's sad they are wasting such a great opportunity for a good education.\nThese conversations prove there are quite a few people on campus that have no desire to be in class. They show up on the first day, the week before midterms and the week before finals. When they are in class, they waste everyone else's time by asking redundant questions, previously reviewed meticulously by the professor in one of the multiple classes they've missed.\nIf the aforementioned paragraph describes you, ask yourself this question: What am I doing here? Tuition at IU-Bloomington costs about $7,000 per year for an in-state student, and nearly $20,000 for an out-of-state student. With that money, you could buy a car, pay your rent forthe year or drink a lot of beer. \nSure, Bloomington is a great town, but you don't have to move away. Get an apartment here, hang out with your friends as often as you'd like, spend every Friday night at a party and every Saturday night at the bar and order as many pizzas as your stomach can hold. Just quit giving the University money for services you don't utilize. Maybe you'll be more ready for college after you take a few years off. There's no law that says you have to go to college as soon as you graduate high school.\nPerhaps in an attempt to weed out these "Screw class, let's get drunk" students, IU is considering stricter admissions standards. While it's true IU is booming and not everyone can be accommodated, only allowing graduates in the top third of their high school class might not be the best option. \nGrades and class rank are subjective; someone who is 12th in one class might not make the cut at another, especially at particularly small schools. So while IU needs to concern itself with letting in the best possible applicants, it would be more fair for potential applicants to utilize self-selection. "Because my parents say I should" isn't a good reason and usually ends in disaster. On the contrary, those who really want to go to school, but might not have had the best grades in high school, will generally work hard and make it through. \nI'm all for having fun; I try to do it on a regular basis. Part of the college experience is making new friends and enjoying yourself. But there is also school to attend to. If you're not ready for that responsibility, then you should probably wait until you are.\nCarpe diem. But carpe your education, too.
