U. of Florida fraternity accused of hazing recruits

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- When Troy Devine decided to join the University of Florida chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, he was hoping to meet new people and make good friends. He didn't expect death threats, stolen and vandalized property or hazing. \nBut that's what happened. \nNow Devine has complained to Florida's Office of Student Judicial Affairs, which is investigating the allegations and may charge the fraternity, known as Pike. \nDevine, who originally joined the fraternity at Florida Atlantic University, became affiliated with the U of F chapter in fall 2004. \nDevine didn't have to go through new-member procedures but said he witnessed pledges being hazed through two recruitments.\n

Southern Illinois U. student hit by falling tile in class

\nCARBONDALE, Ill. -- A falling tile struck two students during a class at Southern Illinos University Tuesday morning. \nThe accident happened just before professor Jo Ann Argersinger could start a history of the Cold War lecture. The students walked away shocked, wet and unharmed, Argersinger said. \nWorkers spent the afternoon building scaffolding because the damaged area could not be reached with a ladder. All tiles damaged by leaking water were replaced.
