Will work for free

I've been driving down the road before, and I've seen someone standing there asking for help, food, a ride, money, etc. I think we have all seen that and felt uncomfortable. We all think that someone else will give that person a ride or someone else will give him or her money. However, at the rate that our society is going, we may be running low on the number of people willing to help.\nI recently spent five days of my life at a Young Life camp in Michigan leading 14 middle school guys. This was not my first time going away to a YL camp, where I actually pay to go with these kids to camp. The experience was definitely worth it - much more so than spending time at my job making money. An experience where we help people felt better to me than an experience trying to make money. I slowly see our society falling even more into the slums of greed. Yes, taking kids to a camp is not everyone's cup of tea but in 10 years, I will enjoy knowing I spent time doing good work instead of making money that I would spend on junk. So what happened to the people who volunteer or enjoy doing things that will not directly benefit \nthemselves?\nThis year, it finally hit me hard that none of the work crew or staff get paid for their four weeks of service. They actually pay their way to get to the camp to work whether it is driving there, flying there, whatever it is. Yes, they get to stay and eat for free but this is true dedication and a true desire to serve others. Why don't we have more people like this in the world? Why is our society based on our own personal demands and goals? Why do we try to drive a better car than the person living next door? Why do we think it is bad to spend a few hours of our lives helping others? Yes, I know that sounds so incredibly corny, but I feel that people don't do enough in the world. Once everyone is satisfied with their own personal needs, they no longer care.\nWhile we think the U.S. is a "progressive" country, I would hope we could be a little more evolved than just being industrially and technologically advanced. As the leading country in the world, will we ever break through our society's bonds to become the true trendsetters that influence everyone to do right? I honestly am sure that I will join the Peace Corps as soon as I graduate from IU. My "career" can go on hold and I can make money in the future. I know that I would at least want to spend my time being free of the controlling influence we have let money partake on us and do something meaningful with my life.
