Kirkwood faces road closing

Portion of road to be closed next week

The 100 block of East Kirkwood Avenue will be closed from 10 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday each night until Sept. 2.\nThe Board of Public Works approved an emergency request from Whaley Construction to close the section of the street in order to perform repairs on the Odd Fellows Building. An inspection by the contractor revealed the limestone and brick masonry on the building was in need of immediate repair because it was in danger of falling, according to a release.\n"We are accommodating the night work and street-sidewalk closures as a public safety measure to ensure that minimal pedestrian and vehicular traffic are present while work is being performed," said Julio Alonso, the director of public works, in a statement. "We regret any inconvenience to residents of the area and appreciate their patience in enabling this work to be completed in a manner that maximizes public safety."\nWestbound traffic will be diverted to Fourth Street and eastbound traffic will be diverted to Sixth Street, according to the release.
