A Bloomington man was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to smother his wife with a pillow.\nAccording to Sgt. David Drake of the Bloomington Police Department, officers responded to a complaint at about 11 p.m. Wednesday at 1700 N. Walnut. Susan Pollard, a 55-year-old female, told officers her husband, 61-year-old Thomas W. Pollard, tried to suffocate her while she was sleeping. \nThe victim, who is dealing with an unspecified medical condition, told the BPD she was sleeping in a recliner at the couple's residence when she awoke to find Pollard holding a pillow over her face with both hands and pushing down. She told police she was able to squirm out from the pillow and asked Pollard what he was doing. He did not answer and left the residence by a taxicab. \nPolice checked with Yellow Cab Company and found that Pollard was first taken to College Motor Inn and then Kilroy's on Kirkwood. He was found at approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday sitting outside of Kilroy's on Kirkwood and was taken into custody. \n"He did admit to attempting to smother her but said it was not a (premeditated) act — that he just snapped," Drake said. "She is apparently in some pain from her medical condition. He said he just did not want to see her suffer."\nPollard is currently being held in the Monroe County Jail without bond. Susan Pollard's sister, Evelyn Clements, would not comment at press time.
