Hoosiers dominate Spartans in 15-2 win

Kemp hits for cycle, leads IU to blowout victory

Having the right balance of pitching and hitting is something the IU baseball team has been searching for all year. Saturday afternoon the Hoosiers had no problem finding it in a 15-2 win over Michigan State.\nFrom the beginning, IU (23-22, Big Ten 6-15) didn't have any trouble with the Spartans (17-23, Big Ten 6-11).\nThe first inning provided the Hoosiers with an early lead as junior center fielder Reggie Watson and junior left fielder Jay Brant both singled and scored to put IU on the board 2-0.\nSenior right fielder Joe Kemp got his offensive outburst started in the second inning by hitting a three-run home run off the scoreboard, giving the Hoosiers a 5-0 advantage.\nKemp made his presence known throughout the rest of the game as he finished going 4-for-5, completing the cycle in the process. A cycle consists of getting a single, double, triple and home run.\nAfter getting the homer in the second, Kemp got a triple in fourth, double in the seventh, and finished the cycle off with a single in the eighth inning.\nWhile the IU hitting was hot under the May sun, the pitching cooled the Spartan bats.\nJunior pitcher Josh Lewis kept MSU at bay all afternoon, pitching seven innings and striking out six.\nIn the top of the third the Spartans cut into the lead after three singles by MSU. However, the Hoosiers responded by scoring seven runs in the next five innings, building the lead to 13-1.\nThe Hoosiers will complete their series with the Spartans at 1 p.m. today at Sembower Field.
