Ask the advisor

Q: HELP! Why won't the system let me register for fall classes?\nA: I'm still learning the new system, too, but here's what I do know. It's probably been "programmed" to stop you, for one of these very common reasons. \n1) It's not your turn. Every student has been scheduled a specific time in which they are granted access to the registration system. You can't enroll until after your enrollment appointment. Log on to OneStart Self-Service, and click on "My Registration Appointment" to see when you can access the system. Be sure you're looking at your appointment for Fall 2005.\n2) You have a hold. If some office is waiting to hear from you and you're not communicating with them, they will block your ability to enroll until you take care of business. For example, the Office of the Bursar will stop you if you have an unpaid bill. Or, some academic units will stop you until you verify your enrollment plans with your academic advisor. Log on to OneStart Self-Service and click on "Holds on My Record" to view who is stopping you, why and who to contact to remove the Hold.\n3) You typed in the wrong term. The Term Code for Fall 2005 is 4058. (The Term Code for Summer 2005 is 4055.)\n4) You aren't eligible to enroll in a class. Not every class is open to every student. If you see any of these phrases listed with a class, then this could be why you aren't allowed to enroll. "Department Consent Required" means you must first call the department to request a permission to enroll in the class. "A Portion of This Class Reserved for..." means some of the seats in the class are saved for a particular group -- usually admitted majors or new freshmen. If you've done everything right and still can't get in, then all of the "open" seats are filled in that class. "Above Section Limited to..." means you can only get in if you are a part of the named group. In any of these cases, check to see if there are other classes of the same course that are not restricted. \n5) You aren't ready for the class. Have you completed (or are you currently enrolled in) the listed prerequisites? If not, the system may not let you into the class.\n6) You missed a step in the enrollment procedure. You must always look for the "Add Status" message (right above the "Submit" button) after you schedule each class. If it says, "Success," you're good to go! If it says, Errors Found", click on it to see why it didn't work. Usually it means you forgot to select the lecture that goes with the discussion you chose.\nIf you've gone through this checklist and none of these issues apply in your case, then there may be something more tricky going on. Refer to page 9 of the Fall 2005 Enrollment Bulletin for guidance from the experts in enrollment procedures.
