As a participant in the IU Washington Leadership Program, I came to Washington D.C. expecting to experience politics as usual, bitterness, fighting and people who only cared about promoting themselves. I was very wrong. \nWorking for Congressman Baron Hill showed me what a true public servant should be like. \nIn my three short months in the office I saw a man that put his constituents first, even if their views conflicted with the views of his party. I saw a man that cared so much about his family, flying home to Indiana almost every weekend to be with his wife Betty and their three daughters. I saw a man that would do anything for his staff, treating them like members of his own family. And finally, I saw a man that offered me a friendly "hello" nearly every day and would chat with me about anything from politics to IU basketball. \nTherefore, I didn't think twice about volunteering nearly two weeks of my time to leave Washington D.C. and be in southern Indiana to campaign for Congressman Hill. \nAlthough his political adversaries resorted to mudslinging, personal attacks and outright lies, Congressman Hill took the high road. He thanked the people of southern Indiana for electing him to three terms in Congress and wished his opponent, Mike Sodrel, good luck. \nThe people of southern Indiana lost a good man Nov. 2, a man that I think represented their values perfectly in Congress. If I ever decide to get involved in public service, I'd say I have a pretty good example to follow.\nJoel Riethmiller\nSenior
