Students demand ban

All-women's college sued for plans to admit men

Two women are suing Wells College in hopes of preventing the all-female liberal arts institution from admitting male students until 2008. \nFreshman Lauren Searle-Lebel and sophomore Jennifer LeBarbera are seeking preliminary and permanent injuctions to stop the school from accepting male students until Wells' freshman class graduates. The suit accuses Wells of breaking contract by allowing men into the school. Searle-Lebel's and LeBarbera's lawsuit also cites the college's use of "deceptive acts." \nThe lawsuit's referral to "deceptive acts" alleges that campus tour guides were instructed to tell prospective students "no" when asked whether the college would admit male students.\n"We're asking for very limited relief," the students' lawyer said, according to www.cbsnews.com. "We just want the women who applied to, and were accepted by, a woman's college to be able to graduate from a woman's college." \nAnd though this situation presents a tough call, we're in the students' corner -- to an extent. \nBoth Searle-Lebel and LeBarbera applied to Wells under the guise that they'd be attending an all-women's institution. And we're sure, after careful consideration, both women set their sights on meeting their academic goals at a woman's liberal arts college.\nWe feel the women should not have to attend a co-ed school if they chose it on the basis of its all-women student population. That being said, there are two options: Wells must help the students, however necessary, to transfer to an acceptable alternative or they must give in to the students' suit and not admit men until at least 2008.
