Nancy Comiskey, a faculty member in the School of Journalism and a former interim publisher of the Indiana Daily Student, received word Tuesday no mother should ever have to hear. She learned at Bloomington Hospital that her daughter, Kate, a 2002 IU graduate, died in a traffic accident on North Walnut Street. \nThe pain the Comiskey family must feel is unthinkable, and the IDS extends its deepest sympathies for the loss. But the impact of Kate's death stretches beyond her immediate family and into the entire IU community. This is a difficult time for us all. \nKate was only two years removed from graduation. Two years removed from strolling through the Arboretum on sunny days, from cramming for tests and finals and from staying up late with friends. She was only two years removed from dreaming of life in the real world -- one she would meet and lose all too soon. She was an animal-lover, a vegetarian and a teacher. She was one of us, and her memory lives on in all of the friends here she has left behind.\nAnd, to many of us at the IDS, Nancy is like a second mother. She served as the IDS publisher two years ago and imparted her journalistic wisdom and motherly advice with grace and kindness. She has maintained a relationship with the newsroom, keeping in contact with students, recruiting new writers and critiquing the newspaper. She will forever be a member of the IDS family, and to know of her pain and sorrow is truly heartbreaking.\nKate Comiskey was taken too soon, but she will be remembered. And, to Nancy and the rest of the Comiskey family, please know during these trying times that you are in our hearts.
