IU concludes fall season 13th at Invite\nThe IU women's golf team recorded a 944 (311-317-316), its lowest three-round total of the fall season, to close out the fall campaign by finishing 13th at the Kent Youel Invitational Tuesday and Wednesday.\nThe Hoosiers' previous best score of the fall was a 960, which they posted at the Mary Fossum Invitational Sept 18 and 19.\nJunior Molly Redfearn led the way for the Hoosiers, finishing in a tie for 40th place after firing a three-round total of 231 (79-76-76). Following close behind was senior Bethany Brunner, who finished in a tie for 51st with a 237 (73-84-80). In a tie for 54th place were juniors Lissa Putnam (78-81-80) and Katie Carlson (81-78-80), who both shot a 239. Freshman Kendal Hake finished 75th for the Hoosiers, shooting a 253 (83-82-88).\nThird-ranked UCLA won the tournament after shooting a five-under par 859 (283-285-291), 19 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Arizona State University.\nUCLA boasted the top three individual finishers in the tournament, led by freshman Amie Cochran, who carded a four-under par 212 (70-70-72). Following her was junior Susie Matthews with a 213 (71-70-72), and senior Charlotte Mayorkas with a 214 (69-70-75).\nThe tournament marked the conclusion of the fall schedule for the Hoosiers. The spring season opens up Feb. 21 and 22 at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.
Head of the Elk to test rowing team\nMidterms have come and gone, but the IU women's rowing team faces its first exam of the fall season this Sunday at the Head of the Elk. \nThe race, a 2.5 mile contest against the clock on the St. Joseph River in Elkhart, Ind., will seed IU against Big Ten rivals Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Purdue. Several other Division I teams, such as Notre Dame, Marquette University, the University of Pittsburgh and Eastern Michigan University, also will push the Hoosiers to make the grade.\n"This will be a real test of our speed early in the year facing some very good competition," said IU coach Steve Peterson. "It will let us know how much we've achieved and what we might need to do in preparing for the spring season."\nThe IU regatta lineup includes two varsity eights and a varsity four, plus two novice eights. \nIU does not place much emphasis on fall racing, but the rowers are confident and see an opportunity for two months of training to pay off, said senior tri-captain Amanda Walker.\n"If we finish well, it'll turn some heads," she said. "That's what we're looking for."\nWalker will stroke the first varsity eight, with junior Lauren Anderson in seven seat, junior Ashley Airis in six, junior Laura Lazaridis in five, sophomore Stacey Young in four, senior Kelly Schuiling in three, sophomore Dana Lynn Powell in two and junior Elisabeth Benoit in bow. Senior Sarah Meyer will be coxswain.
Men's swimming and diving team heads to Texas\nThe No. 14-ranked IU men's swimming and diving team has a busy weekend in the Lone Star State. Today, the Hoosiers travel to College Station, Texas, where they will face the No. 19 Texas A&M Aggies. Coming off a victory against the Evansville Purple Aces two weeks ago, IU coach Ray Looze will have his squad prepared for another showdown against its second strong opponent from Texas. \nLast year, when both schools competed at a dual meet, the Aggies thwarted the Hoosiers 180.5 to 117.5 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington. This time IU intends to beat the Aggies at their house.\nThe Hoosiers have a lot of confidence going into this important meet; freshman Todd Patrick earned Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for his performance against Evansville. Two other freshmen seemed to come into their own against the Purple Aces, as Ben Hesen and Nick Walkotten paced the Hoosiers with two event titles. Three weeks ago, after IU's tough loss to No. 5 Texas, junior Kevin Swander earned Big Ten Swimmer of the Week and senior Marc Carlton collected Big Ten Diver of the Week honors.\nThe Hoosiers will travel to Dallas Saturday for a showdown with the unranked Southern Methodist University Mustangs. After the meet with Texas A&M, the gritty schedule takes the Hoosiers to another hard opponent in SMU. SMU will be the third school based in Texas IU will have faced in dual meets.
Volleyball looks for revenge against OSU, Nittany Lions\nThis weekend the IU women's volleyball team will be looking to use some of its tricks and treat themselves to a couple of victories. \nThe team will be in University Park, Penn., Friday to face No. 6-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m. before traveling to Columbus, Ohio, Sunday for a Halloween showdown with the No. 7-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.\nPenn State heads into the match with IU fresh off a 3-2 loss to Ohio State, which dropped Penn State to 8-2 in the Big Ten.\nAfter beating the Nittany Lions, the Buckeyes improved their season record to 19-1, 9-1 in the conference.\nIU played host to both teams less than a month ago in a similar double header but hopes for different results this time. The Hoosiers lost the previous meetings against both teams in straight games, 3-0.\nAfter hitting a rough patch at the beginning of the Big Ten season, the Hoosiers have won two of their last three matches. The team headed into last weekend's double-header fresh off a win over Northwestern, the team's first conference victory of the year. \nThe momentum was soon lost, as the Hoosiers fell to the No. 2-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers, but the team rebounded for a win over Iowa to split the weekend matches.\nIn order to get back to their winning ways, the Hoosiers have made some lineup changes, including putting freshman Juli Pierce in at libero, and also have had strong floor leadership from seniors Christina Archibald and Katie Pollom.
Field hockey team ready for final 2 home games\nFor the first time in a month, the IU field hockey team returns home. The Hoosiers will play host to Ohio State and St. Louis University this weekend. IU has compiled a 10-6 record so far this season and looks to gain momentum going into the Big Ten playoffs.\nOhio State enters the match against IU with an 8-8 record, led by sophomore Curlynne Wynn, who has scored seven goals with a team-leading 15 points. Sophomore Saskia Mueller and freshman Yesenia Luces also lead the Buckeyes' offense behind junior goalkeeper Lindsay Williams. Williams has recorded 124 saves and a 1.33 goals against average. \nWith a 5-9 record, St. Louis is looking to snap a three-game losing streak behind coach Maria Whithead, who is in her first year coaching the Billikens. St. Louis has three players who have scored at least 10 or more points. Senior Ellen Rapp leads the Billikens with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Junior goalkeeper Julie Moeckel has stopped 68 shots on the year. \nThe Hoosiers are coming off a new school record set for most consecutive road games in a single season when they finished up their seventh straight road game against Michigan State Sunday. With both games in Mellencamp Pavilion, IU hopes to break its winless streak in Big Ten play.\nDuring their road stretch, the Hoosiers went 4-3 on their way to producing the most wins in a season for the program. The Hoosiers are led by freshman Frederique Meeuwsen, who has scored four goals in the last three games, including a game-winner in overtime over Miami University of Ohio. \nThe Hoosiers take on Big Ten opponent Ohio State at 2 p.m. Friday and then play their season finale against St. Louis at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, with both matches being played in the Mellencamp Pavilion.
