Trespass reported at Bryan House

Homeless man warned in case at President's house

The IU Police Department responded to a trespass at the president's house Friday, issuing a warning to a homeless man. IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger said a groundskeeper at Bryan House called in the complaint after a suspect approached him about making a movie. \n"He stated there was a subject who came up to him acting rather strange, and talked about wanting to make a movie," Minger said. "But the groundskeeper indicated that the person acted a little odd, that he appeared as if he may have had some mental problems or been on medication or something."\nIUPD received another complaint just over an hour later from an employee of the Indiana Memorial Union. Minger said an officer responded and found the suspect met the same description as the man at Bryan House. At that point, Minger said the suspect said he was homeless and was advised of trespassing.\nMinger said dealing with the homeless population isn't anything new.\n"That's really not out of the ordinary," he said. "Our guys run into homeless people all the time, as well as transients traveling through Bloomington. It's not just indigenous to IUB. It's well known among the transient population and homeless people that universities and academic communities have buildings accessible to on a 24/7 basis for academic purposes."\nThe incident was the second in a week at Bryan House for IUPD. On Jan. 9, a suspicious subject wearing a toboggan and orange and pink ski goggles was reported at the president's house, asking about a dog. \nMinger said there is likely no connection between the cases and sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a suspicious person and a passerby trying to keep warm during the winter months.\n"We never know, especially in this kind of cold, whether it was someone trying to mask their identification or just cold," he said. "But it's always cause for alarm"
