The IU board of trustees will meet today and Friday at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis to vote on the appointment of Interim Chancellor Ken Gros Louis.\nThe board will also hear a report by a task force created by President Adam Herbert to investigate Camp Brosius' economic viability and review designs for new buildings on the IUPUI and IU-Bloomington campuses.\nTrustee Peter Obremskey said he expects there will be no dispute over the vote on Gros Louis' recommendation, which Herbert made Nov. 21.\n"Ken's been around a long time -- there shouldn't be any controversy," Obremskey said. "He's the man for the job."\nOnce appointed by the board, Gros Louis will serve as interim chancellor for 18 months, effective Jan. 1. Gros Louis retired from the position of chancellor in 2001 and returns to the position with 21 years of experience.\nAlso at the monthly meeting, a task force examining Camp Brosius, a camp staffed primarily by IU students, alumni and staff, will make a presentation to the board. The task force is comprised of 12 people from various University administrative offices, the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, the Alumni Association and the camp's attendees.\nSteve Keucher, chair of the task force and director of the University Budget office, said the committee examined various aspects of the camp's economic viability.\n"In September, President Herbert announced he would create a task force to conduct a comprehensive study of the camp, including operating costs, staffing, capital needs, revenue and other considerations," Keucher said.\nCamp Brosius, located on Elkhart Lake in Wisconsin, has been owned by the University and operated by the IU Alumni Association since 1974. The camp offers programming for infants through teenagers, as well as tournaments, trips and other leisure activities for adults.\nThe IUAA decided it will not renew its lease to operate Camp Brosius after its expiration in October 2004. \n"At the time, the Alumni Association had forwarded a proposal that the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management assume management of the facility, and there was also another proposal to raise private funds for camp improvements and an endowment to cover operating expenses," Keucher said.\nKeucher said the board is responsible for the decision regarding Camp Brosius.\nIn addition to a report by the task force, the Facilities Committee will review designs of two new projects. The first building plan to be reviewed is the new campus center at IUPUI. \nThe committee will also review plans for the Computation Information building on the Bloomington campus. This building will be part of a proposed science quad behind the geology building between 10th and 11th Streets.\nThe design reviews will be presented by University Architect Bob Meadows, who must outline the basic criteria for all buildings on campus, Obremskey said. Meadows has oversight over the architect hired since he's responsible to the board of trustees.\nThe proposed 105,435 square-foot building will house University Information Technology Services, the Indiana Pervasive Technology Labs, campus-wide technology support groups and a variety of training and conference facilities.\n-- Contact staff writer Alli Stolper at astolper@indiana.edu.
