'Sweet Home Indiana'

Students put on skits, perform songs at 'Yell Like Hell'

On the eve of Homecoming weekend, there's only one thing to do -- put on some cream and crimson, put on a skit and "Yell Like Hell."\nStudent organizations from all walks of campus came together Thursday night to put on skits, cheer and get revved up for Homecoming. \nMany groups embraced the Homecoming 2003 theme, "Sweet Home Indiana." Many group members jumped at the chance to go on stage and prepare their fellow fans for Saturday's game. \nDelta Tau Delta fraternity pledge Taj Shah, who performed in a skirt, tank top and sombrero, said that his costume was a small price to pay for school spirit. \n"I'm currently pledging, so I do whatever I'm told," Shah said. "Unfortunately, it's voluntary and I'm sober, but I said yes to the outfit anyway."\nSenior Maggie Brozio, president of the IU Student Alumni Association, said the event is a great way for students to show their spirit and to get ready for the weekend. IUSAA sponsored "Yell Like Hell."\n"'Yell Like Hell' kicks off Homecoming and brings all the student organizations together," she said. "It's a big spirit competition to get everyone excited about the game this weekend. I think we had a better turnout than last year."\nThe IU pom squad kicked the evening off with an energetic performance of Loon's "How You Like That," and Straight No Chaser performed a crowd-pleasing version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." Ladies First was also a popular act, performing "It's Raining Men," and the clear crowd favorite, a cover of Christina Aguilera's "Fighter."\nMany of the student skits poked fun at IU, referencing the football team's record, last year's dorm porn, and the overabundance of squirrels on campus. \nDanielle Lamutis, a sophomore member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, spoofed Calli Cox of Shane's World fame. \n"It was in the script, and they said they needed somebody to be the porn star," Lamutis said. "So they were all like, Danielle, you can do it!"\nThis was Lamutis' first "Yell Like Hell," and she said she enjoyed the event.\n"I think it's really cool how everyone comes together," she said. "It's cool to see greek houses and non-greek organizations coming together and have a good time."\nLocal radio station B-97 morning personality Kevin Osborn played master of ceremonies, and Ladies First performed one last number as IUSAA judges tallied points. In third place was Delta Zeta sorority and Phi Kappa Delta and in second place was the IU Student Foundation.\nFirst place honors went to the Residence Hall Association/National Residence Hall Honorary duo. RHA/NRHH did a musical number, featuring a re-worked version of Don McLean's "American Pie," performed as "The Night We Kissed the Wildcats Goodbye."\nSenior Brad Snyder played a marching drum set in the RHA/NRHH skit.\n"Winning was quite a rush," Snyder said. "We put a lot of time into the skit, and it's great to win"
