Students raise money for holiday campaign

A student group is beginning its Halloween campaign to raise money for the United Nations Children's Fund.\nIU UNICEF Campus Initiative, founded by junior Grace Chung and senior Katie Forrest, functions as a student volunteer group to raise funds for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and raise awareness of the issues that children in poverty and emergency situations face.\nFor the campaign, called the "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF," students collect loose change during the Halloween season to help support UNICEF programs around the world.\n"Trick-or-Treat" collection boxes will be available from noon to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the Indiana Memorial Union Literatures Desk. Collection boxes also are available at Pier 1 Imports, 849 S. Auto Mall Rd. Boxes should be returned between noon and 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the IMU.\nDuring its 53-year tradition, "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" has raised more than $119 million in donations for children around the world.\n"One of the greatest benefits of 'Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF' is that it gives American children and students a wonderful opportunity to learn about the world around them," said Kimberly Penharlow, director of the "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" campaign. "And when American children 'Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF,' they are literally helping to save other children's lives."\nFounded in 1946, UNICEF helps save, protect and improve the lives of children around the world through immunization, education, health care, nutrition, clean water and sanitation.
