Evansville releasing names of sex offenders

Decision made after Indiana Supreme Court rules names can be posted on web

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Sheriff's departments continue to post lists of convicted sex offenders on the Internet, two months after the Indiana Supreme Court ruled the names could be made available online.\nMost offenders are listed by name, date of birth, physical description, crime and last known address. But more information will be posted later, including photographs.\nThe court ruled in June that the Web site, managed by the Indiana Sheriffs Association, did not violate the rights of convicted offenders.\nSome counties are still compiling information for the site. Officials in Vanderburgh County sent a list of 346 sexual offenders on Wednesday.\n"I don't expect it will take very long to get it all online," Vanderburgh County Chief Deputy Eric Williams said.\nAuthorities plan to get photographs of offenders and updated information on their whereabouts each time they register with police as required by law.\n"They are subject to be checked on at any given time by any law enforcement," Williams said. "And their information had better be current, or they can plan on being charged with a crime."\nThe law requiring the sex offender data was enacted in 1994. The original measure only required sex offenders to register with police. An amendment passed last year added the requirement that the names, addresses and photographs of offenders be posted on the Internet.
