Eastside campus renovations beginning and ending

Eigenmann finishes changes, Campus View begins construction

As renovation is currently underway at Campus View Apartments, Eigenmann Hall residents are enjoying the recent changes made to their building.\nEigenmann saw "a complete renovation of student rooms," according to Larry Isom, Residential Programs and Services director of facilities. \nIsom said the building suffered from old age and needed new pipes. Air conditioning and heating were also replaced. Just like students at Willkie Quad, who reaped the benefits of a renovation that occurred three years ago, Isom said Eigenmann residents can now control the temperature of their own rooms with recently installed thermostat systems. \nThe format of the rooms has also changed. \nAdjacent singles had their common walls torn down and replaced with a divider wall that is about waist high and has a gap where students can pass from side to side.\nRoommates may choose to make arrangements however they want, either each taking one side of the room to himself, or moving both beds to one side of the wall and keeping a common study area in the other.\nThe latter is what freshman Derrick Weiler and his roommate decided to do. \n"There's a lot more room than I expected," Weiler said. \nFreshman Brandon Hall said he liked the size and shape of his new room. \n"It's nice being kind of separated from my roommate," Hall said. \nSophomore Cordell Eddings, a resident assistant, said he preferred the current living conditions in Eigenmann to those of his former dorm in Forest Quad.\n"Every room has A.C. and heat. Everything is more convenient," Eddings said.\nThe basement of Eigenmann also was changed over the summer. Campus Card Services, an IU Bookstore and a café are a few of the recent fixtures which replaced the dining facilities that used to be located there. \nJust north of Eigenmann along Union Avenue, Campus View is undergoing its own renovation, starting with the East Wing.\nHousing Manager Steve Rolfe said the building will be completely repiped and new heating and air systems will be installed to improve efficiency. The balconies will have a different look, including new safety glass panels. New kitchens and bathrooms will also be installed. Rolfe described the proposed apartments as "like a new building in an old shell."\nAssociate Director of Apartments Tim Stockton said the project is divided into three phases, the first of which is currently underway. He said the renovations started June 1 of this year. Each phase of the renovation will concentrate on a different wing and last six months, with two months in between to allow the residents to relocate. \nRolfe said that the "big move" is still a concern. \n"We're still talking about it every day," he said. \nHowever, permanent plans cannot be made until the east wing nears completion this winter.\nRolfe said many of the east side high rises were built in the early 1960s, which means they are all in need of renovation at the same time. \n"Tulip Tree, we hope, is next," he said. \n-- Contact staff writer James E.
