Kathi Bennett coaches Pan-Am

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- The USA Women's Basketball Pan American Games team won its third game in a row with a 93-78 win over Argentina on Tuesday. IU Women's basketball coach Kathi Bennett is an assistant coach for the 3-1 team. \nThe foul-filled game featured a balanced offensive attack by the U.S. team as five players scored in double figures. In total, 55 fouls were called by the referees in the match-up, with five players sent to the pine for fouling out. \nGeorgetown junior Rebekkah Brunson and Tennessee sophomore Loree Moore led the USA attack with 12 points apiece, followed by three players with 11 points apiece. Moore also led the team in rebounds with six boards in the contest. \nTuesday's win solidified USA's shot at the medal round that consists of the top four teams in the tournament. \nThe game was a close battle through the first half with USA leading Argentina 39-37 at halftime. After the half, USA took control with a 11-4 run that resulted in a 48-43 lead in the third quarter. USA then put together a 9-0 run with an effective inside-out game that put the score at 57-43 in USA's favor. \nComing into the fourth quarter with a commanding 67-52 lead, USA never let their competitors within 11 points of the lead in the final quarter. The second half was full of fouls as 31 of the game's 55 personal fouls were called in the final two periods, with 18 of those in the fourth quarter alone. Such blatant fouling gave both teams a chance to show their abilities from the stripe as Argentina scored 16 of its 31 points in the second half from the charity stripe, while the USA's last 10 points came from the line.\nAfter the game, the USA team was pleased with its shooting prowess in the contest. \n"Our shooting is really clicking right now, or at least it seems that way," Carey said in a news release. "When we start inside and go out, it helps drastically, like it did today. We're learning to play together offensively and starting to put some points up."\nThe USA will conclude round-robin play Wednesday against host Dominican Republic, which has lost three straight games. Cuba also has locked up a spot in the medal round by going undefeated for its first three games in the tournament. \nTeam USA members cite defense and rebounding as the skills that are required in order to get into gold medal contention. \n"Defense is the key to getting to the gold medal game," Texas junior Jamie Carey said in a news release. "Getting stops and being solid on the defensive end. Our rebounding has to be there"
