It is hard to make good movies for children. They are often filled with either crude humor or made overly simple because it is assumed the children who see the movie won't notice. "Holes" fits neither of these molds. "Holes" is even better than most adult movies.\n"Holes" unfolds over several generations, with most of the story revolving around Stanley Yelnats IV (Shia LeBeouf), wrongfully convicted of stealing shoes and sent to a juvenile detention camp where the warden (Sigourney Weaver) orders them to dig a 5' by 5' hole every day, claiming it builds character. In truth, the Stanley's family has been searching for the buried treasure of Kissing Kate Barlow (Patricia Arquette). His family has been cursed ever since the first Stanley Yelnats stole a pig. "Holes" weaves back and forth from Stanley and the story of how Kissing Kate Barlow went from being a schoolteacher to becoming a criminal. \nMost movies fail because they include only an idea, but lack a plot or story line. "Holes" does not suffer from these problems, having been based on the award-winning book of the same name. Both the book and the screenplay are written by Louis Sachar ensuring the translation from the book to the movie is accurate. As a book, "Holes" won the Newbery Medal in 1999, which is the prestigious award for children's books. The movie succeeds because of the way the film's producers blend all the different stories and time periods into an entertaining and engrossing movie. It also has a cast of kids who give fairly good performances, like Khelo Thomas, who plays another camper nicknamed Zero. Also the adults include many character actors who mesh with the kids including Jon Voight, Dule Hill, Tim Blake Nelson and Henry Winkler. \nWhile "Holes" probably won't win any Oscars next year it is an enjoyable movie for anyone, of any age. It is inspiring to see a film so well done when so many kid's movies are churned out to make a profit on a low quality and a stupid premise.
