Rioting ruined beautiful tourney How sad to ruin such a beautiful run in the NCAA basketball tourney with rioting. After suffering losses to UCLA in 1972, Kentucky in 1975 and Duke in 1992, some immature idiots have to give IU a reputation of being low class like Purdue and Maryland. Come on, students, show some class and prove to the rest of the country that intelligent people attend our university. I live in Houston now, after growing up in Bloomington, and I was proud when the Houston Rockets won back-to-back and WITHOUT rioting and looting afterwards. A lot classier than L.A., New York or Detroit and Chicago. I was disappointed to lose, too, but show class and applaud the team. Don't act like a bunch of immature morons. John Gray
Alumnus Davis is person first, coach second In response to "Coach Davis' donation says homosexuality sinful," April 2: First, and most importantly, despite the fact that Mike Davis is a Christian, his donation to the Eastern Star Church of Indianapolis was made to help underprivileged youth. Stating that coach Davis' donation "supports the propagation of homophobia" is unfounded. This was simply your interpretation of his motives, and in no way a fact. Secondly, you stated he should have donated the money to the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transvestite) Student Support Services and that by doing this you "hope it brings together all community members." Yet this all deals with an assumption. You are assuming that all people believe that homosexuality is not a sin. So, by donating to GLBT, Davis would have also promoted that ideal. The fact that Davis is a Big Ten national coach has no bearing on his donation to his church. He is still a person first, and a coach second. Who are we, as students, to question his ideals? Simply because he is currently in the limelight in no way means he answers to either IU or its students when dealing with his personal life. I fully agree with Mike Davis' right to support his beliefs, just as you are supporting your own. Amanda Elmore
Sophomore GPSO move deserves support The move for Graduate and Professional Student Organization independence deserves the support of all students, both undergraduate and graduate. Graduate student independence will allow the IU Student Association to focus on its "core competency" of advocating on behalf of undergraduates. It will give graduate students a forum to air their concerns and combine their efforts as well. GPSO independence is not a threat to any group. It is merely a recognition of the undeniable fact that undergraduates and graduates have markedly different interests. It is a good change, and I applaud Kirkwood's support of GPSO independence. Junior Teater right that "boys" aren't ours Duncan Teater's article, "Don't get carried away" from the April 3 issue was refreshing to read. I'm glad someone has realized that the term "our boys" can be a dangerous weapon. When used as yet another absurd, homespun catch phrase by our president, it encourages blind support for him, the commander of our soldiers, and alienates those who choose not to adopt the boys-and our leader's decisions-as their own. We don't own these boys; we simply come from the same country, and they are doing as one man, albeit a very powerful man, bids them. It is absurd to assume that we have any part in their actions, which is what we are doing when we use the term "our boys." We should carefully examine what the boss-boy Bush is commanding our country's soldiers to do, as well as the image he gives our country, before we offer them all our unconditional support.
