Ill Niño rocks you like a hurricane

Revolution/Revolucion\nIll Niño\nRoadrunner Records\nIt's the musical trend du jour. A no-name hardcore band, from a no-name suburban town writes a few angry songs and gets picked up by a major label. This has been the case with Korn, Slipknot, Mudvayne and most recently; Ill Niño. After spending a few years on the club scene in central New Jersey, Ill Niño was signed by Roadrunner Records and recorded their debut album Revolution/Revolucion. \nAs implied by the bilingual album title, the band has a heavy Spanish influence, which can be seen in each song. Many of the tracks contain lyrics sung in Spanish, as well as the rhythmic drumming seen in various Spanish styles of music. \nBut, more important than Ill Niño's influences is the music they play. The debut single, "Unreal" uses all of Ill Niño's talent to its fullest. The song combines several guitar sounds, double bass drums and incredible vocals to create what is considerably the best song on the album. \nVocalist Christian Mochado uses several vocal styles to create different sounds on each track. During some of the songs, Mochado whispers into the microphone, enticing the listener to pay close attention. On other tracks, he simply screams with a sonic force equivalent to that of an Air Force jet. Yet in every single song, he manages to break down and sing with harmony and melody, showing his true abilities as a front man. Musically, the album as a whole is somewhat stale. Blaring guitars and drums drown the bassist and DJ out, and several of the songs are simple and repetitive. \nAlthough Ill Niño will not be climbing up the TRL charts anytime soon, they have started making an impression on the ever-growing hardcore scene. They have received significant airplay on their native New Jersey radio stations, and have had the video for "Unreal" shown on MuchMusic's "Loud," a program dedicated to hardcore and punk bands. They have already toured with such noted bands as Slipknot, Disturbed, Papa Roach and Black Sabbath during Ozzfest, and have invaded almost every club in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area. Presently they can be seen touring with Kittie and No One.\n
