This Irish chick flick flaunts an attractive slimeball who cheats on his girlfriend with her sisters and never gets caught, ticking off any level-headed female viewer. Trouble is, the villain is neither completely lovable nor detestable.\nThe most recognizable performer in "About Adam" is Kate Hudson ("Almost Famous") as Lucy, a nightclub singer with a bad Irish accent who asks out shy Adam (Stuart Townsend), who doesn't seem too interested. \nAnd he probably never was, because he sleeps with Lucy's bookish sister Laura (Frances O'Connor) and pursues another, more intelligent sister, Alice (Charlotte Bradley).\nLucy's brother David (Alan Maher) also develops an unwanted sexual attraction to Adam. So, everyone besides Lucy develops a passionate relationship with Adam, even Lucy's mother. Things become slightly interesting when Lucy proposes to Adam in front of her family and he accepts.\nThat's about it for the plot. You could either love or hate Adam for what he's doing to sweet-faced, ignorant Lucy. But he doesn't do much as an unelaborated, boring villain.\nThe sisters are more despicable because they don't seem to care about Lucy's feelings. Plus, Lucy has her own affair. But there isn't a persuasive reason why you should adore Adam, either. \nHe tells lies about his parents dying in a car wreck and his dad leaving him, but he doesn't severely hurt anyone's feelings, rather pleasing the sexual desires of Lucy's unfaithful siblings. \nThe siblings each narrate chapters of the film, so you never get Adam's perspective and only 20 minutes worth of Hudson. The only insight into why Adam is doing this is his comment to Alice: "I like to give people what they want," which might as well be b.s.\nThis movie calls to mind "Bridget Jones's Diary," another film with a lovable American actress with a misguided accent and a disappointing ending. But "Bridget Jones" has 10 times the laughs and a much more solid storyline. There's nothing complex or unique about "About Adam."\nThe DVD only features three sneak previews of other terrible films and director's and actors' dubious compliments about the film. There is one redeeming quality to the disc: at least it's short.
