NEW DELHI, India - Suspected Islamic militants hurled grenades and opened fire on police, sleeping villagers and Hindu pilgrims in Kashmir, killing 12 people in the first such assaults in three weeks, Indian officials said today. The attacks come as tensions along the border in Kashmir that divides India and Pakistan had appeared to ease. Children, Hindu pilgrims and police officers were among those killed in the grenade explosions and gunfire, a Kashmir security official said. Indian security forces killed five Islamic militants in two separate gunbattles in southwestern Kashmir today, officials said.
