DVD a good bite of dark comedy

Novocaine -- R\nStarring: Steve Martin, Laura Dern\nDirected by: David Atkins III\nPulling teeth is usually pretty painful. But "Novocaine" makes the practice of dentistry a funny and clever subject for a dark comedy. \nComedic legend Steve Martin plays Dr. Frank Sangster, a good-turned-evil dentist (Dr. Evil would be proud) who owns a well ran, routine practice where every day is pretty much the same. His life is dull and repetitive, and Sangster has pretty much numbed himself to his crappy life. All of that changes when a new, intriguing client named Sally (Helena Bohnam Carter) seduces Sangster into giving her prescription drugs. Sangster's problems snowball, and Sally and her brother (Scott Caan) begin to make his life a more complicated hell. \n"Novocaine's" cast is full of potential, but only Caan and Carter deliver solid performances. Laura Dern comes close to giving a good performance as Sangster's deceptive fiance, but at times her lines seemed forced and unnatural. Though "Novocaine" is a comedy, Martin really isn't in a comedic role. He acts to the best of his ability in "Novocaine," but I think the "Jerk" has reached his potential in serious roles. \nThe "Novocaine" DVD adds more creativity to the unique movie, and is full of interesting bonus material. A short documentary chronicles murders and crimes solved through dentistry. We also get a peek behind the scenes with the making of "Novocaine." The DVD contains a few deleted scenes including a scene where Martin has trouble putting on his robe. The scene is entirely classic Steve Martin improv, something we haven't seen from him in a long time.\nThe disturbingly funny movie combined with decent special features makes "Novocaine" worth buying for fans of dark comedies.\n
