Not Another Teen Movie - RStarring: Chyler Leigh, Chris Evans, Jamie Pressly
Directed by: Joel Gallen
"Not Another Teen Movie" is probably one of the best parodies to be released in the past few years and is only beaten by the "Scary Movie" installments. The only problem with "NATM" at the box office was that its trailers unnecessarily showed pretty much every funny bit in the movie. It didn't have to be a movie that "if you saw the preview you saw the movie," but "NATM" had four or five different trailers that left nothing new for the movie.
But "NATM" is definitely a funny and clever movie. It pulls no punches ripping on every teen movie from the classic "The Breakfast Club" to the stupid "She's All That." The story is about Jake Wyler (Chris Evans), the "popular jock," who makes a bet with his friend that he can't turn Jamie Briggs (Chyler Leigh), "the pretty ugly girl," into the prom queen. Jake enlists the help of his sister, "the cruelest girl in school," to help turn Jamie from ugly to beautiful.
"NATM" parodies a ton of high school movies, but the best were the scenes that made fun of "Varsity Blues." Billy Bob (Ron Lister) from "Varsity Blues" plays Reggie Ray in "NATM." He's a big fat guy who only has three concussions left before he dies, but his over-the-top coach refuses to take him out of the game. The scoreboard even has a statistical category for "number of concussions Reggie Ray has left before he dies."
The "NATM" DVD is full of deleted scenes. Some are dumb and deservingly deleted, but many of the cut scenes are of Randy Quaid playing Jamie's drunk father. Quaid is at his best in many of the takes, and it's good that the DVD gave viewers a chance to see Quaid at the top of his game.
This disc offers a plethora of DVD bonus features, and that's really what owning a DVD is all about. Most parodies are over-the-top at times, and "NATM" is no exception. But, it manages to stay funny throughout the movie, and its cleverness is what sets it apart from most stupid parodies.
