Administration was wrong

Little 500 week has not only been blessed with beautiful spring weather but also with several special events sponsored by greek organizations. Tuesday, more than 2,000 people flocked to the Kappa Sigma fraternity to listen to the sounds of the band O.A.R. The show had no problems maintaining order in a "dry" environment. \nBut two other Greek events scheduled for this week were cut short -- ending the fun and philanthropy that were intended to exclude alcohol. The past year has left a tarnished film on the greek system. And just as the greeks take a step forward, the administration unjustly knocks them back. \nThe Mike and Joe concert sponsored by Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity was shut down early Thursday morning when two guests were caught with alcohol. The concert that was scheduled from midnight to 3 a.m. was shut down at approximately 1:10 a.m. Neither of the people with alcohol were members of the fraternity, yet all partygoers had their jubilation abruptly ended by two people who couldn't follow the rules. The TKE fraternity tried to ensure a fun time for all by searching all guests at the door for alcohol. Any alcohol found was immediately thrown out, TKE president Bill Surprise said.\nThe other event, a hot dog roast sponsored by the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and the Pi Beta Phi sorority, was halted by Assistant Dean of Students Jim Gibson's orders on the grounds that it was not registered through the Office of Greek Affairs. The two houses sponsored the event in an effort to raise money for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D). \nBoth of these infractions seem trivial when compared with the reprimands handed down by the administration.\nWhy should those abiding by the rules be punished for the actions of so few? Why should the administration crack down on a philanthropy event that is meant to raise money for charity? The administration was wrong in its decision to close both of these events. Turmoil has struck the greek system throughout the year, and just when its organizations attempt to reconcile their image, the administration attacked them as if they were in the wrong.\nThe punishment for the alcohol infraction at TKE should be administered to the individuals, not the whole. This blanket ruling on the part of the Gibson and the administration is unwarranted.\nA barbeque scheduled by Sigma Chi was set to take place Thursday night. Gibson, a Sigma Chi alum, might be in attendance. Whether the event goes on or is canceled will be known after press time. Good luck to the greek community, in error or not.
