The Evil Dead - R\nStarring: Bruce Campbell\nDirected by: Sam Raimi\n\"Evil Dead: Book of the Dead Limited Edition" is the most disturbing, creepy and well crafted DVD I have ever seen, and that merely describes the packaging. This edition finally gives the cult classic its due. \nFor those who haven't seen this horror staple, a brief synopsis is in order. Several young adults head to an abandoned cabin in the woods for a relaxing weekend. They stumble upon a tape recorder and the Book of the Dead. An archeologist had been studying the book and translated its text onto the recorder. On playing the recording, an evil is awakened in the woods. What follows includes human possession, evil trees and tons of dismemberment.\nThis film is a low-budget masterpiece. The ample amounts of gore, the use of weird sound effects and the cheesy special effects made it innovative. Director Sam Raimi created an intense vision by using odd camera tricks and angles. \nThis version utilizes the available technology to present the movie at its best. While the movie was shot with poor equipment, the picture has been remastered to near perfection. The sound quality in this version is also the best it's ever been, especially if you have Dolby Surround Sound. \nThe DVD excels in the extras department in innovative ways. The first is the packaging, which is an actual recreation of the Book of the Dead. It looks amazingly creepy and is well crafted. The "Book" is supposed to feel like dead skin when it gets cold, and while I can't say I've touched any corpses lately, it is still very disgusting.\nThere is a lot of material to keep one's interest after the movie ends. The best new feature is the short documentary "Fanalysis" by "Evil Dead" star Bruce Campbell. He turns the camera around and focuses it on the die-hard cult fans. It is weird, often hilarious and occasionally scarier than any horror movie could be. The two audio commentaries are great and informative. The first is by Raimi and producer Rob Tapert and the second is by Campbell. The Campbell commentary is far more entertaining but both are worth a listen. There are also outtakes, make-up tests, a trailer and several hidden features.\nAny horror fan should own this definitive version of "Evil Dead." Even if you have an earlier version, the design, extras and improved movie quality warrants another purchase.\n
