"The State" was possibly the most underrated comedy show that has ever been on television using irreverent wit to entertain its audience. The group started in 1988 at New York University and produced 26 episodes for MTV in the mid-'90s. Now, some of the members have gathered once again to make the funniest film of the past few years with "Wet Hot American Summer."\nIt's the last day of camp in 1981, and the counselors at Camp Firewood are gathered for one last day of playing capture the flag, having barbecues, making out and humping refrigerators. The movie is a satire of early '80s films such as "Meatballs," but does not just spoof its cousin with similarities. It takes those films and runs with them in a new direction. "The State"'s members are hilarious in their writing and acting alone, but with great actors like Janeane Garafolo, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd and Christopher Meloni adding to the teenage counselor mix, the group's appeal is undeniable.\nThe comedy that is represented is not for everyone, because many people just won't understand why it's funny. It's hilarious in its randomness and unpredictability. An ode to the "coming to terms with yourself dance" montage of movies like "Rocky" and "Flashdance," a motorcycle chase scene where a simple bale of hay can cause incredible problems, and talking cans of vegetables that can perform self-fellatio are all simple scenes that together make this film hysterical. \nThe actors are all in their 30s or so, but pull off the trick of playing teenage counselors with ease because many of them were in fact counselors at that age, as stated in the commentary by director David Wain, co-writer Michael Showalter and Garafolo. The commentary is hilarious as well as informative. Letting the audience in on secrets such as small screw-ups, little things that the naked eye can't see and explanations of why a particular joke is funny to them is what commentaries are for. A hilarious montage of deleted scenes with commentary, a behind the scenes documentary and cast interviews make this a well-rounded DVD that needs to be bought. An amazing new special feature is also added to the disc; the alternate audio track with added fart sounds, ingenious.\nMany people might not see why this film is funny, but it's hilarious and can guarantee a few minor crack-ups if not a couple of huge gut-busting, roll-on-the-ground for minutes of tear-filled laughter. Buy two copies because one will wear out pretty soon.\n
