Voters encouraged to re-register

Monroe County has thousands of registered voters who no longer live in the area.\nOnce a voter is registered, moving outside the area can cause problems for both the county and the voter, officials said.\nPat Haley, Monroe County clerk, said voters must notify the registration office "technically, legally, when you move, even across the street."\nRegistered voters are required to vote at certain polling sites and are registered for jury duty.\nIf those moving outside the county do not remove their name from Monroe County's list of registered voters, they may still be called for jury duty. They also may not legally register to vote in another county.\nCounty tax payers pay for polling sites to be open for those registered to vote, even if those voters no longer live in the area.\nMonroe County requires notification when a registered voter moves and written permission to remove a voter from the list.
