\"Just park the kids in front of the TV. That's how I was raised, and I turned out TV." \nHomer Simpson once said this about his favorite contraption, the television. Well, now there is something worth watching on the talking box as long as there is a DVD player connected. Finally, the creators of the longest-running prime time television show have released the first set of "Simpsons" episodes. \n"The Simpsons -- The Complete First Season," just released on DVD, has made fans of the amazing show more excited than anything the Springfieldonians have done in a long time. The three-disc collector's set includes many extras as well as the entire crudely drawn first season. \nMany first seasons of television shows are not very good compared to their later ventures, and "The Simpsons" is no different. In fact, it might be one of the worst first season shows when compared to how it eventually evolved. There really never has been a show that has done such a U-turn into success. That is why this DVD is so good. You can now watch how bad these episodes really were when compared with Homer's recent adventures and before the creators worked all the kinks out. \nThe differences are obvious. Homer was just a big jerk, Lisa was still amused with Bart's antics and Waylan Smithers was black. "The Simpsons" then was more about a dysfunctional family when now the show should be called "Springfield: The Simpsons and Everyone Else." It's better now that they have expanded, but it is interesting to see where it all began.\nThere are episode scripts, short documentaries, out-takes and early drawings of characters, but the best extra feature has to be the creator commentaries done on every episode. They point out everything that they have changed to make the show better, all the mistakes they've made and more importantly, they laugh at themselves for the product they made 12 years ago. They say what we all think while watching these crudely drawn, poorly-written episodes.\nFor any fan of the show, this compilation is a must-have. Not too many people like the first season when compared to the phenomenon the show has become, but this is where it all began. Matt Groening has promised more DVD's to come, and this is a great start so far.
