SRSC offers private workout

Every day, thousands of IU students flock to cycle, play basketball or lift weights to tone their bodies. They sweat it out at the Student Recreational Sports Center and Health, Physical Education and Recreation building. \nFor some, the idea of working out in front of crowds of people inspires another kind of sweat. Many find sporting spandex and sweating to the beat intimidating. To address the concern, a new room has been created at the SRSC for students who desire a quieter, more private workout atmosphere.\nThe new room, known as the Strength Circuit, is located in a renovated racquetball court across from the CycleFit Studio in the SRSC, and is comprised of rejuvenated old equipment. The machines are not necessarily easier to use than those machines already in the Strength and Conditioning Room, but the new room does provide for a less intimidating exercise environment.\nTen Cybex weight machines and two stationery bikes make up the new Strength Circuit room. In order to attract users who lack experience with strength and conditioning equipment, consultants will be available every weekday during operating hours except from 6-8 a.m. to give instruction on how to properly use the machines. \nDesigned to fit the needs of inexperienced users and students who are under tight time constraints, the Strength Circuit allows for a total body workout in a short amount of time. Students can use a variety of weight machines and get a cardio workout on the bikes all in one room.\nThe costs for the addition and creation of the room fall under the student activities fee of $37.46 that each student pays every semester. \nNot all students believe the addition is necessary.\nSophomore Holly Hofmann said she enjoys using the old strength and conditioning room and doesn't anticipate using the strength circuit room. \n"I think I will just use the strength and conditioning room because I don't mind working out with other people," Hoffman said.\nBut many students are excited about the addition to the SRSC.\nSophomore Christina Pumariega said she plans to take full advantage of the new room. \n"Although I may not be as experienced as some of the buff guys in the weight room, I do like to work out," she said. "I think this new room will be better suited for my exercise needs because I'm more interested in a quiet workout environment."\nSophomore Tiffani Jones works out regularly, but on some occasions doesn't have the chance to get in her full workout.\n"It sounds like the new Strength Circuit room will be a great alternative for me," Jones said. "I can get in, get my workout done and get out"
