Special features blow away the competition

Blow - R Starring: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz Directed by: Ted Demme

\"Blow" holds true to New Line DVD distributor Infinifilm's motto of "Setting the Standard in DVD."\nSo far, Infinifilm has only released three films on disc, but promises many more. If "Blow" is any hint to what will come, then Infinifilm's future will be a happy one.\nThe movie is the true story of George Jung (Johnny Depp) and his life as a drug trafficker. Jung starts off small, arrested for selling marijuana, before his cellmate Diego Delgado (Jordi Molla) introduces him to the world of cocaine. The movie is great in the first place, especially for the fact that it is real, but the DVD just gets better from there.\nEvery disc should have just as many special features as this one. You have the option of watching all the deleted scenes and special features separately or during the film. An on-screen pop-up such as, "Watch a deleted scene with Diego; press enter," appears and you have the choice to watch it or not. Similar things have been done in the past such as the "Follow the White Rabbit" option on "The Matrix" DVD, but "Blow" is best so far.\nSome of the other great special features on the disc are documentaries about Columbia and cocaine addiction, a production diary, interviews with the real Jung from prison, character outakes and a commentary with director Ted Demme and Jung. This commentary is really interesting, but one can tell that Demme and Jung are not watching the film together and that Jung might not be watching it at all. He only speaks to explain the real story and characters more in-depth than the film. You learn more in the commentary than in most, but it would have probably been even better if Jung was actually watching the movie.\nOne of the best features on the disc, or any DVD, is the "Fact and Trivia Subtitle Track." This contains little facts about drugs, the actors, the filming or the story that let the audience in on little things viewers normally wouldn't know. The idea is very similar to "Pop-Up Video" on VH1.\nEvery DVD in the future should have all these features. It takes little effort on the creator's part and will please many more viewers -- and will win people over into the DVD world. New Line has the right idea in creating a separate company that only deals with DVD and hopefully more production companies will follow in the future.
