Once a year, television actors and actresses gather to celebrate excellence in their profession with the annual Emmy awards. Having this year's celebration, though, is turning out to be more difficult than usual. The show has been postponed twice, and no definite plan exists on when to have the award ceremony. \nContinuing to have events like the Emmys is key to helping the country return to normalcy.\nThe awards show was originally set for Sept. 16 but were postponed after the terrorist attacks. It was moved to Oct. 7, which happened to be the day that the United States and the United Kingdom began to attack Afghanistan. The event was postponed once again. According to the Emmys Web site, it was not postponed for security reasons, but instead as a question of respect. \n"We thought, we can't go on. We thought this is not the time to have a celebration, as much as we wanted to do it," said President of the Academy of Television Arts Jim Chabin. \nThe question now is whether the awards should still be held or if the winners should just be announced. In light of the events of the past month, the awards seem a bit trivial, but it is still part of our culture. Not having the ceremony would be changing our way of life because of acts of terrorism, and we cannot let that happen. \nAnother suggestion has been that the award show take place on an army base. This would be a bad idea. While it is important to show patriotism during these trying times, this would be taking this idea a step too far and might come off as kind of tacky. While noble in its intent to provide entertainment to the troops and get their minds off war for a couple hours, it's a bit too far to take things. \nThe tributes planned to the victims during the show and toning down the atmosphere is appropriate for paying respect. \nEven in times of tragedy, the show must go on. An event as seemingly trivial as the Emmys can help our country feel a little better about itself, if only for a couple hours.\n
