The Indiana Daily Student

Start your weekend right

So now you've finished the first issue of IDS Weekend. You might have noticed we're doing things a bit differently. It's still the same magazine, but we've made some changes. Hopefully, you like it better.\nWe realize it can be hard to find something fun to do on a Friday night in small-town Indiana, but rest assured, we'll do the scouting work for you. This semester, we'll look for the most happening places and events in Bloomington. We want Weekend to be your source for the inside track on entertainment.\nThe IDS recently conducted a survey to find out what you want to see in the magazine. Some of you said you like the magazine, some said you don't, others never read it. But almost all of you were unsure what relevance it has, especially because the daily newspaper always has an arts section.\nSo what is the difference between Weekend and the Arts section of the IDS? Sometimes it's hard to say because there's a lot of overlap in what each covers. But generally your high arts (ballet, opera, museum exhibits) are going to be in the Arts section. Weekend will focus more on casual, low-key entertainment -- the stuff that you can show up to wearing your most comfortable, worn-in jeans.\nWhen we feature events, we won't just tell you the when and where -- we'll look closer. We'll show you what's interesting about the event and why you might want to go. Not everyone finds the same things entertaining, so we'll try to give you a variety of options to fill your social calendar each week.\nAnd we recognize that not all of you are 21. So while it might be great to know that your favorite band is playing at the bars, that's not very helpful if you're underage. But there are other places to go to hear local music. And even if you are legal, the bar scene isn't for everyone. We'll keep all this in mind as we're deciding what to cover. \nEach issue will have a comprehensive weekly events calendar including music, comedy, poetry readings, etc. We'll also highlight a couple of outstanding events each week, one of which will always be something you don't have to be 21 to get in to.\nWe'll also still have music and movie reviews, and you can look to our Web site,www.idsnews.com/weekend, for any reviews we couldn't fit in the magazine. One small change is that we're adding rating systems so you can tell at-a-glance exactly what we thought of each CD or movie.\nThis page will be a forum for people to discuss different aspects of the entertainment world. It won't always be the same people each week or the same topics. It will just be a place for us to get our opinions out and speak directly to you.\nThat's a lot of information, so thanks for wading through it. We aren't snotty and high-brow, so we won't pretend to be. We're friendly, down-to-earth people just like yourself, but with the responsibility of helping you have fun on the weekend. So keep reading and send us your suggestions, comments and criticisms at weekend@idsnews.com.
