Many of you may remember my son, Craig Sowder. Craig was twenty-years-old when he passed away in April 2000. Those of you who do remember Craig will know him from high school in Carmel, Alpha Sigma Phi or from a class at IU.\nCraig would have begun his fourth year of study at IU this semester, had he not been stricken with cancer during his freshman year. He continued his studies until his death a year and a half ago. Since many students who knew Craig are also beginning their fourth, and possibly last, year of college I want to remind you of a very special person who touched your lives.\nHow can I be sure Craig's life had purpose? As his mother, I pray that the young man who was my child will live long in the hearts of others. I gave up my son unwillingly, but I have to hope that the reason Craig lived was to teach all of us about what is important in this life.\nDo any of you remember Craig's wisdom? His ability to assess your problems and find a solution was appreciated by all who sought his advice.\nCraig's sense of humor will always be remembered, too. He was a very special person and I hope your lives will be better because of him.\nAs you pursue your dreams and ambitions, please remember Craig Sowder and live the life he would have wanted to live. He had so much to offer this world and just wanted you to love him, respect him and remember him. Think of the times you spent with Craig and what he taught you. Take those bits of humor and wisdom and pass them along to others. He would be proud of you.\nOn October 20, there will be another Hoosiers Outrun Cancer walk and run. Please consider walking with me as we help others in Craig's memory. Look for the Team4Sowder sign.
