Philanthropies just social events

A few issues were called to my attention upon reading an IDS article entitled "Greeks get down and dirty for philanthropy" (March 26). Upon reading the headline, I was satisfied with the fact that the IU greek system was once again raising money by organizing some sort of social event. \nHowever, as I continued to read the article I was slightly disturbed due to the circumstances of this Capture the Flag philanthropy event. "Nearly $500" were raised after Dunn Meadow was "filled with ketchup, dish detergent and maple syrup." Could the "nearly $500" go to cover the cost of the wasted food and dish detergent that was hurled in the name of this environmentally irresponsible event? Could the thrown food have instead been donated to a local soup kitchen? \nIt is my hope that the greek community would come up with more responsible and efficient ways to be philanthropic. From an outside point of view, it would seem that the methods of raising money, like playing host to highly social events and making messes in Dunn Meadow, are much more about having fun than helping people. If the greek community wanted to prove that they are truly concerned about others they could come up with better ways to raise money than high-profile social time. \nIn all fairness, there are few students at IU who are beyond reproach for not doing their part to truly help good causes. But if the greek community wants to be a role model for others on campus, then they need to start being more responsible about what they do for the sake of philanthropy. The IDS should start giving space on the front page to groups that are responsible and hard working for the sake of philanthropy.
