Tantrums outweigh good record

President Brand's decision to fire coach Knight is gratifying. As a member of the University, Coach Knight had an obligation to act responsibly toward the University and toward those for whom he was responsible. As an institution, the University has the right to insist upon responsible behavior particularly from its high-profile members and to insist further that those of its members who refuse to accept minimal standards of personal behavior can no longer be part of the institution. \nMoreover, sports and athletics have problems of violence and arrogance (as well as drugs and cheating) that exist at all levels and that cannot be accepted. Coach Knight may be a classically tragic figure ' brilliant and flawed. Still, President Brand was right in finally saying "no more." IU and its basketball program will survive this change and be the better for it.
