Two Indiana drivers died after a head-on collision on State Road 46 Friday night, according to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Police responded to reports of a major crash at 5:18 p.m. on SR 46 east of Stinesville Road. They found two vehicles had crashed head-on in the road.
One driver, who has not yet been publicly identified, was found dead at the scene. The other was identified as Cindy Bentley, a 62-year-old woman from Gosport. Police say the unknown driver was a Spencer resident.
Bentley suffered severe injuries and had to be extracted from the vehicle by police. She was flown by helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she later died from her injuries.
The police are still investigating the crash. The Monroe County Coroner’s office is working to identify next-of-kin, the press release said.
The release identified several other agencies assisting crash investigators: Ellettsville Police Department, Ellettsville Fire Department, Bean Blossom Township/Stinesville Fire Department, IU Health Lifeline and Owen County EMS.
