IU pitcher signs professional contract forgoing senior season

IUBASEvsUL

Two and a half weeks after being drafted, the first Hoosier underclassmen has made a decision about his future.

Pitcher Scott Effross, who would have been a senior next season, announced late Saturday night on Twitter that he would be signing a contract with the Chicago Cubs, forgoing his final season of eligibility in Bloomington. The Cubs drafted Effross in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft on June 10.

Effross sent two tweets Saturday, the first saying how grateful and forever indebted he will be to IU for the opportunities the program has presented him. The second announced his intention to continue his baseball career as part of the Chicago Cubs organization.

In his IU career, Effross pitched in a variety of situations, from starting to closing.

In his junior season, Effross made 21 appearances for the Hoosiers accumulating a 2.35 ERA and going 4-4. Seven of the 21 appearances were starts, mostly coming in the early part of the season.

This was the first time the Twinsburg, Ohio native has been drafted.

The other two Hoosier underclassmen left to decide their futures are rising junior Jake Kelzer and rising senior Christian Morris, both pitchers.

Both Kelzer and Morris also split time between starting and coming out of the bullpen this season.

Kelzer was drafted in the 14th round, also by the Cubs, while Morris was drafted in the 21st round by the New York Yankees.

The deadline for signing a professional contract is July 17.
