Q&A with Waka Flocka Flame

Waka Flocka Flame performed in Kilroy’s Dunnkirk Wednesday night. The IDS sat down with the rapper before the show to discuss his music, his fans and his performance philosophy.

IDS Can you tell us a little bit about your musical career so far? What do you like about it?

Waka What I like about my musical career is that I’m the most turned up, excuse my language, motherfucker on Earth right now.

IDS
And what does it feel like when you’re performing for all of those people?

Waka I feel like I’m skydiving with a microphone. Can’t wait to reach the bottom. It’s amazing.

IDS Tell us about your fans.

Waka My fans, they’re really “acceptive.” You would think that I knew everybody I take a picture with. I was told, somebody around me was like, “Hey yo, your fans treat you like you’re a homeboy or something, like you’re really their friend.” And that’s how I look at it.

IDS And you like that kind of interaction?

Waka Yeah, I like that vibe. It’s smooth, it’s cool.

IDS What inspires your music?

Waka What inspires my music, I feel like going to the next level. Every time I do music, I always want to go to the next level. So every time I do music I’m like, “Shit, I got to go to the next level.” If this level’s like this, I know the next level’s gotta be way better. So I just want to elevate. I wanna evolve.

IDS Where do you get those ideas for this evolution?

Waka It’s God, ‘cause this shit’s not human what I do, so it’s gotta be God.

IDS How much of your music do you think your fans relate to?

Waka
I’d say all of it. A lot of my music I make to have fun and turn it up. About 40 percent of my music, it really be like music that I really feel emotionally at the time. So I always rap on how I feel at the time. I never rap about shit I wanna do. If I don’t feel like it, I don’t make it.

IDS So it’s all true to your life as well then?

Waka
Of course.

IDS What are your plans for the show tonight? How do you think it’s going to go?

Waka My plans for the show tonight? I can’t lie; I really want to see how the night’s gonna play out cause I really don’t have any plans. I just come. I come, I fuck shit up and I leave.

IDS Any fan favorites you’re going to perform?

Waka
I come, I fuck shit up and leave.

IDS Is there anything you like to perform specifically?

Waka Once again, I come, I fuck shit up and leave. There’s never a favorite record, there’s never a favorite moment. Performing is the moment. Yeah.

IDS Why should people come out and see you perform? What are you giving them?

Waka If they really wanna see a show, they’ll come see me perform. They really wanna be entertained. They really wanna have an experience.

IDS How has your tour been so far?

Waka
Sold out everywhere. I been on the road since 2010. It’s 2014. There’s no stoppin’.

IDS Do you ever want to go back home?

Waka Negative. What man would want to go home after livin’ a life like this? Gotta be a fool.

IDS
Do you ever get in touch with your family?

Waka
Always. Never lose touch with the ones that help you craft your style and develop the person that you are today. See, I like being busy ‘cause it’s like losing touch so you gotta stay in contact.

IDS Is there anything you want to tell us about yourself that you think maybe your fans don’t know that you want them to?

Waka
“Flockaveli 2” on the way man and it’s time to turn the fuck up.
