In defense of RPS

I have yet to see anybody stand up for RPS. It's come to a point where we have a campus group whose mission is to "give students a unified voice against the unjust practices of RPS …" This quote comes from the Cooperative Opposition to Residential Programs and Services. I will admit that in the past, I've been adamantly against RPS -- the dining services in particular. I remember initially thinking that RPS was an evil corporation trying to take everybody's money.

Giving her stuff back

It's not like I want to hate my ex-girlfriend. I believe it's wrong to hate anybody, including poopie doo doo head people who just happen to be my ex-girlfriend and ex-friend. But now she's asking for her stuff back in extremely tacky and brief emails that could very well be haikus. I just want to say I want my poop deck shirt back Next time your in town The audacity! The nerve! The grammatical error!

Bloomington gets some style

Oversized hoodies and velour suits are part of the basis for fashion inside downtown Bloomington's latest boutique. Urban Stylz is the name of Bloomington's first and only urban wear shop. The store, located at 113 7th St., greets customers with a bright yellow and red graffiti style sign.

Ship carrying missiles intercepted

WASHINGTON -- A ship carrying a dozen Scud-type missiles from North Korea was intercepted in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday, U.S. officials said. They said the missiles were believed to be headed for Yemen. The ship was stopped and boarded about 600 miles east of the Horn of Africa, the officials said.

Presidential search committee holds first meeting

The presidential search committee, which is in charge of finding IU's next president, will hold its first meeting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, in the Distinguished Alumni Room of the Indiana Memorial Union. The 17-member committee will search for a replacement for IU President Myles Brand, who announced Oct. 10 that he will leave the University to head up the NCAA starting Jan. 1. IU Purdue University at Indianapolis Chancellor Gerald Bepko was named as his replacement until a new president is appointed July 1, 2003.

A fight over war

As the United Nations reviews the findings of the weapons inspection team in Iraq and the document the Iraqi government submitted in accordance with the Nov. 13 U.N. Security Council resolution, organizing against a preemptive strike on Iraq continues apace. Results of the new data on Iraq, as reported by The New York Times, could be available at the end of the week.

Students make call to order

To sit the bench, you've got to be able to stand your ground. It's the strength of mind required to judge a could-be-expelled student in their last chance at appeal or to settle an election contest between two dueling parties, each wanting their role in the university. Someone's college career could be on the line, and there's no room for indecisiveness.

US seeks 'diplomatic solution' with North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea -- Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said Tuesday that Washington would seek a "diplomatic solution" to North Korea's nuclear weapons program. North Korea reiterated its rejection of a U.N. watchdog's appeal to abandon its nuclear program and to accept foreign inspections.

Some people assume he is Mexican. Others think he is from Southeast Asia. With his black hair, smooth dark eyes and tawny complexion, IU sophomore Melvin Tejada doesn't blame them. "I'm dark," he said. "I've had some people in my life think I'm Indian." Yet Tejada's ethnic background is neither Mexican nor Indian -- his parents actually emigrated to the United States from El Salvador 30 years ago.

Hanover College shuts down

HANOVER, Ind. -- Most of Hanover College's students left the campus Tuesday as officials called off classes for fear that a teenager suspected of killing his parents might come in search of his brother, who is a student at the school. Hanover officials made the decision Tuesday morning as Kentucky State Police continued their search for 16-year-old Blake P. Walker, who is wanted on two counts of murder.

Couples therapy offered

Nearly 20 years ago at the University of Washington in Seattle, psychology professor Dr. Amy Holtzworth-Munroe learned the Behavior Couples Therapy theory from her adviser who had helped develop it. Now, as an expert in marital relationships, she is guiding IU psychology Ph.D. students in this same behavioral approach. Under the supervision of Holtzworth-Munroe, students in the clinical Ph.D. program are offering couples therapy for people in and around the Bloomington community.

Palestinian court frees alleged terrorist

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- The Palestinian high court on Tuesday ordered the release of the alleged mastermind of a clandestine shipment of Iranian weapons to the Palestinian Authority, but it appeared unlikely he would be set free soon. The defendant, Fuad Shobaki, is being held under British supervision at a Palestinian jail in Jericho, the only West Bank town not under Israeli occupation.

Rumsfeld" Horn of Africa is key partner in war on terrorism

ASMARA, Eritrea -- Sharpening the U.S. focus on the Horn of Africa as a haven for terrorists, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld arrived in the Eritrean capital on Tuesday to discuss expanding military cooperation and to visit American troops training in neighboring deserts. Rumsfeld was visiting Ethiopia and Djibouti as well as Eritrea. The three impoverished nations are neighbors in an unstable region that lies across the Red Sea from Yemen, the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden.

Indy mayor declines governor bid

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson on Tuesday took himself out of the running for governor, citing family reasons and a desire to remain the leader of the state's largest city. "I will not be a candidate for governor in 2004," the Democratic mayor said during a news conference. "I love Indianapolis and I love this job and I can't imagine at this time in my life that there's anything else I'd rather be doing."

Smashes and duds taking the stage on Broadway

NEW YORK -- To paraphrase (sort of) from Charles Dickens: It was the best of shows, it was the worst of shows. Two big, expensive musicals arrived this week on Broadway within a day of one another, and their receptions couldn't have been more different. "La Boheme," Australian director Baz Luhrmann's takes on the beloved Puccini opera, received the best reviews since "Hairspray" opened last August. But "Dance of the Vampires," starring Michael Crawford, had most critics out for blood and tossing around such adjectives as "mindless," "vapid," "amateurish" and "mortifying." For "La Boheme," the rapturous notices have paid off at the box office. Monday's take, the day after the opening, was close to a million dollars, "in the high six figures" according to producer Jeffrey Seller, and sales continued to be strong Tuesday.

Musicians have makings of rock stars

Musician Graham Colton has all the makings of an up and coming rock star. Performing songs from his debut self-titled album he showcased his unique style and talent Thursday night at Axis. Students filled the club for a charity concert featuring Better than Ezra. While most are familiar with the sound of BTE, the opening act, The Graham Colton Band, was a creative surprise. This was the second time the Dallas-based band played in Bloomington this year. The Graham Colton Band came to IU touring with the Counting Crows in October.

Ex-local drawing Internet success

Before the development of online comic "Cosmic Tom-ix," Rich Reardin posted his cartoons on bathroom doors. Reardin, a resident of Bloomington, attended University of New Mexico, and studied cinematography and film. He was inspired to write comics because of his love for art, cartoons on television and the newspaper. "I used my own comic drawings to poke fun at the world as I saw it," Reardin said. "Usually, it was centered around a work situation or a personal experience."

Future ticket fiascoes can be prevented

Needing win, women ready for Texas game

The IU women's basketball team hits the road again and continues its long-traveled pre-conference season tonight. The Hoosiers duel with North Texas in Denton, Texas at 8 p.m. tonight. The Lady Eagles, who have the fourth longest home winning streak in the nation, finished first in the Sun Belt conference last year and compiled an overall record of 21-9 before losing in the first round of the WNIT. Coach Kathi Bennett, who is in her third year at IU, is eager for the challenge against North Texas, who have won 15 consecutive home games.

IU men's basketball coach Mike Davis described Bracey Wright's double digit scoring as "quiet" in last Saturday's win over University of Illinois-Chicago. The freshman guard managed to score 16 points with little fanfare as teammate Jeff Newton grabbed his third double-double.
