Double Duty

When Kathy Davis was asked to step into the office of lieutenant governor shortly after the October death of Gov. Frank O'Bannon, she wasn't exactly blindsided. The former mechanical engineer and Harvard M.B.A. had worked closely with Indiana lawmakers in various capacities since 1989, when she served as deputy commissioner for the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Video captures Borden in jail

The Monroe County Jail has released a security video of James Borden being brought into the jailhouse and taken away motionless on a stretcher last November. Borden, 47, died during the process of being admitted into the Monroe County Jail Nov. 6, 2003. The video shows a disjointed series of images from three separate angles of the incident.

Court limits student funds

Theology students hoping for state financial aid may need to look elsewhere. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled March 3 states can refuse to grant financial aid to theology majors. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Supreme Court rejected arguments that banning student aid to theology majors violates the First Amendment's freedom of religion provision and the 14th Amendment's equal-protection guarantees. "Training someone to lead a congregation is an essentially religious endeavor," wrote Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist for the court's majority. "Indeed, majoring in devotional theology is akin to a religious calling as well as an academic pursuit."

Thief smashes into ticket office

A safe located in the ticket office of the Musical Arts Center was broken into over the weekend. After several break-ins last semester and one over winter break, this is the first theft at the music school this semester. The safe, which contained an undisclosed amount of money, is located inside the ticket office.

Local human rights awards given

The Bloomington Human Rights Commission presented their seventh-annual Human Rights Awards at the Bloomington Common Council meeting Wednesday. Two recipients were chosen -- the late Frank McCloskey and the Bloomington Bill of Rights Defense Committee.

Ball State student found dead

MUNCIE -- A Ball State University student whose body was found in the backseat of a car died of a single gunshot wound to the head, an autopsy found Monday.

Varicella vaccine bill dies in state Senate

Annual luncheon to honor women

Wednesday, the 19th Annual Bloomington Women's History Month Luncheon will be held at the Bloomington Convention Center to commemorate national Women's History Month. The theme for this year's luncheon is "Women-Inspiring Hope and Possibilities," and will feature speeches by Mayor Mark Kruzan and Indiana State Budget Director Marilyn Schultx, The luncheon will start at 12 p.m.

IU alumnus starts ULife.com

A Web site aimed at the desires of college students was recently launched by an IU alumnus. Andrew Clark, who graduated in 2001, is the co-founder and vice president of ULife.com, a Web site catering to the wants and needs of college students. Clark will be spending the next month in an RV promoting the site.

Grant allows for further diabetes research

The IU School of Medicine will continue to be a part of a $4.2 million national study regarding the quality of care received by diabetes patients. IU has received a five-year extension on the study and will receive about $625,000 each year, over the next five years.

Hoosiers winners of six straight to face Xavier

The Hoosiers will take their six-game winning streak to Cincinnati Tuesday to face the Xavier Musketeers. IU is coming off a three-game home sweep against Cleveland State. The offense for the Hoosiers got rolling as the team combined for 41 runs in the three games. Seniors Kevin Mahar and Seth Bynum, along with junior Corby Heckman led the way for IU, each knocking in three runs.

Eli Lilly to change drug-testing process after suicide INDIANAPOLIS -- Eli Lilly and Co. said it will lengthen the withdrawal period to wean study participants off an experimental drug, mainly to ease concerns from test subjects after the suicide of a 19-year-old who participated in the study.

Marines shoot, kill gunman

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- U.S. Marines shot and killed a gunman during an outbreak of gunfire at a weekend demonstration by Haitians celebrating the ousting of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a spokesman said Monday. The gunfire occurred during an anti-Aristide march Sunday, prompting the Marines to return fire in the first armed action of their week-old mission to stabilize Haiti.
