WASHINGTON -- Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist's hospitalization for cancer brings with it the prospect of the first Supreme Court vacancy in a decade and is prompting speculation about who might take his place. Rehnquist has been the court's conservative anchor for a generation. Even before his thyroid cancer diagnosis, most believed the 80-year-old would step down in the next presidential term.

Israel approves withdrawal from Gaza

JERUSALEM -- Prime Minister Ariel Sharon won a historic victory Tuesday when parliament voted to approve his plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank -- the first time lawmakers have authorized the removal of Jewish settlements from lands the Palestinians claim for a state. The 67-45 vote, with seven abstentions, gave strong backing to Sharon's plan to evacuate 21 settlements in the Gaza Strip, where 8,200 Jewish settlers live amid 1.3 million Palestinians, and four in the West Bank.

On a walk home from breakfast with friends this weekend, I found myself walking up Grafton Street. Grafton Street is a street in Dublin's City center, situated between Trinity College, the voluptuous Molly Malone statue and St. Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. After a severe drought of flu shots both locally and nationwide, the IU Health Center has received what director Hugh Jessup calls "just a little bit more of a shipment." But this little bit should be enough, Jessup said, to serve needy individuals of the IU community.

Reporter lectures on journalists' rights

A journalist found himself in a tough position when he got a phone call. On the other line, an FBI agent told him he and two other reporters would be put behind bars if they failed to hand over 12 hours of interview tapes with a key witness to a terrorism trial. Weeks later, a U.S. District Judge issued the official order saying that by 9:30 the next morning the tapes must be given up. So he did what he felt was right. Abdon Pallasch told his two young sons he might be going to jail.
