FORT WAYNE -- A blizzard might not recognize county boundaries, but Indiana's system for declaring snow emergencies does.

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man pleaded guilty to reckless homicide Monday for starting a fire in a box truck that trapped himself and a dozen other housepainters in a moving inferno and fatally burned two of the men.
It's time to become a real, bona fide adult. Or maybe this is just practice. This semester I will abandon my life at IU to work and study in Washington, D.C. There are two reasons I chose SPEA's Washington Leadership Program: one, because I know it is a true test of my maturity, and two, because it is a true test of my professionalism. These are not the only reasons, however.
DETROIT -- The Chrysler 300, America's "in" sedan, and Ford's new Escape hybrid SUV were named North America's top vehicles at the North American International Auto Show. The 300, which becomes the 300C when it's equipped with Chrysler's powerful Hemi V-8 engine, won 2004 North American Car of the Year. Ford Motor Co.'s Escape won for 2004 North American Truck of the Year.
FORT HOOD, Texas -- A military guard testified Monday that he saw Spc. Charles Graner Jr. punch an Iraqi detainee in the face a moment after a notorious photo was taken at Abu Ghraib prison. Another witness said Graner was "laughing and having a good time" while making naked prisoners pose.

On a campus laden with tattooed, eyebrow- and nostril-ringed hippies and their typical opposites, sorority sisters, I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what everyone's problem is with my septum ring.
If I have to hear one more time how perfectly moral this country has become, I'm going to scream. That's quite a shock to common wisdom because most scholars, pundits, sociologists and other masters of public opinion clamor for a more moral America.
The Lilly Endowment has been extremely generous to IU in the past years, and for this we are grateful. The Endowment's Dec. 16 $53 million Metabolomics and Cytomics (METACyt) grant to the University to study how cells work is just the latest in a stretch of generosity dating back to 1958.
This was an emotionally driven weekend for the No. 13-ranked IU men's swimming and diving team. In Friday's meet, the Hoosiers took on No. 11-ranked Tennessee at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, knowing that the day after they would have to travel to Columbus, Ohio for a Big Ten match up with Ohio State. They entered the meet against the Volunteers with much needed confidence, but failed to keep their momentum going, as they were upset by OSU the next day.
A role reversal happened Saturday at Assembly Hall. Bracey Wright the shooter went into his phone booth and came back as Bracey Wright the aggressor. The junior, notorious for his three-point persistency, instead attacked the basket more often. The result: 30 points on 11 of 22 shooting while putting the Hoosiers on his back in his own Superman performance in IU's 74-61 victory against Wisconsin.
New IU football coach Terry Hoeppner spoke at halftime of Saturday's basketball game at Assembly Hall. His message was short and simple as the former Miami of Ohio coach looked straight into the student section and made a simple request. "I've got to have you," Hoeppner said. He was greeted by applause.
Flags across the IU campus and the nation flew at half-staff last week as the United States honored the victims of the Dec. 26 tsunami in the Indian Ocean. The disaster, which has claimed the lives of more than 150,000 people in Asia and Africa, has motivated Americans to help the devastated region.
As of 11 a.m. today, Mitch Daniels officially will be Indiana's new governor. To celebrate, Daniels brought together everyone that helped him claim victory -- from his grassroots supporters to the VIPs.
INDIANAPOLIS -- When Peyton Manning plays, records fall. If Sunday was any indication, opposing teams do, too.
ST. LOUIS -- Twenty-nine days ago, IU senior Danny O'Rourke celebrated his team's second straight national title. Friday evening, the cherry topped the cake of O'Rourke's career as he received the 2004 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy.
NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran and the New York Mets agreed Sunday to try to structure a $119 million, seven-year contract, a lawyer involved in the negotiations told The Associated Press. In the first indoor meet of the season for the men's track and field team, one Hoosier has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Junior Ryan Ketchum hurled the shot put past the NCAA Provisional standard of 17.75 meters to grab first place with a mark of 17.84 meters.
Women's track and field begin season The IU women's track and field team opened up its indoor season on a dominating note as the team held its annual Hoosier Open meet. The Hoosiers won 8 out of 19 events and had strong placed finishes in the others.
Whatever IU coach Mike Davis put in his Hoosiers' Wheaties this past week worked. Coming off a disappointing and embarrassing 21-point loss at Northwestern in the Big Ten opener Wednesday, IU regrouped and defeated Wisconsin at Assembly Hall 74-61 Saturday night.
