IU drops 3-of-4 to Illinois

The IU baseball team saw its fair share of surprises this weekend: April snow flurries blanketed Sembower Field, a 12-6 deficit turned into a comeback victory and junior designated hitter Zach Boswell hit an inside-the-park home run. However, the final outcome this weekend proved to be the biggest surprise, as IU dropped three out of four games to Illinois.

Draft winds unfamiliar to IU

As a soon-to-be graduate of this fine university, I must say I'm a bit worried. Especially if the journalism industry is as harsh to IU grads as the National Football League has proved to be. During this weekend's NFL Draft, Hoosier receiver Courtney Roby joined the ranks of professional footballers when the school's all-time leading receiver was selected at the beginning of the third round by the Tennessee Titans.

IU senior tackles Boston Marathon

The first marathon senior Kelley Ann Schilke ever ran she "got suckered into." Two years ago, her friends talked her into running the Chicago Marathon with them -- and then they dropped out. Determined to prove herself, she decided to run it anyway. "I trained all winter and beat all their times," she said. "After that, I was just hooked."

Student seeks removal of Benton mural section

Benton mural hanging in Woodburn Hall room 100 that features members of the Ku Klux Klan and a burning cross is in the spotlight again after former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination Rev. Daniels defends donated recreational vehicle, plane trip

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Mitch Daniels said using a donated recreational vehicle and accepting a free private plane trip to Washington did not fall under a strict gift ban for state employees he imposed when he took office. Daniels said the items were not personal gifts to him, but donations to the state that allowed him to conduct state business. "I won't say I resent the question, but I find it very misguided," Daniels told reporters Friday.

South Bend teachers facing large cut-backs

SOUTH BEND -- As many as 380 South Bend teachers -- about one-fourth of the staff -- will be notified that their jobs might be eliminated, the superintendent said. Also, at least 10 central administrators will be notified by the end of next week that their jobs might be eliminated, South Bend schools Superintendent Joan Raymond said Friday. The reduction in force -- or RIF -- is the largest in Raymond's five years leading the corporation.

'Underground' to close Wednesday

Dennis Laszlo, owner of The Underground retail store at Kirkwood Avenue and Walnut Street, walked slowly across his showroom floor Saturday afternoon to tell a customer that everything was half off in the store, which would be closing its doors for good Wednesday. "We're disappointed," Laszlo said of his brief stint in downtown Bloomington.

According to Reuters News Service, the Texas House of Representatives passed a bill this week banning gays from becoming foster parents. Says State Representative Robert Talton (R): "There's a risk that more of the children will go into homosexuality because it's a cultivated and learned behavior."

Car bombings in Iraq kill at least 21 people

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- An emboldened Iraqi insurgency staged carefully coordinated dual bombings in Saddam Hussein's hometown and a Shiite neighborhood of the capital Sunday, killing at least 21 people. An American soldier was killed in a separate attack.
